What About a Car Donation Center ... ?
Most car donation centers are middlemen. Ask up front how much they take off the price of your car and how much will actually go to the charity of your choice.
Remember if you donate car charity, only donations to organizations defined as charitable under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code are tax deductible.
Before 2005, the rules for tax deductions for car donations were somewhat more lax and the potential tax benefits were greater. As with most things, if there's money involved, some people will give in to greed, giving rise to the instances of fraud and abuse. A big problem was donors inflating the value of their cars and taking larger deductions then their vehicle was worth.
In 2005, the Internal Revenue Service tightened their rules to prevent donors form inflating the deductions. With the new rules, the deduction will depend on what the charity will do with the vehicle. If it sells the car, usually the case, you can't take a deduction for more than the proceeds of the sale.
As with most rules, though, there are a few exceptions. For example, you may base your deduction on the vehicle's fair market value if the charity sells it to a needy individual at a discounted price or if the charity uses the car as part of its mission instead of selling it.
If the claimed deduction is $500 or less, the IRS will also allow you to deduct the car's fair market value.
Donors should not be discouraged by the new rules. The key to avoiding IRS scrutiny is to get full documentation of your donation, including a 1098-C form, from the charity. The paperwork should state the gross proceeds of the sale or indicate if one of the exceptions apply.
